“Duvarmuseum: The Art of Collaboration” displays many projects focused on the sharing and co-creation which happened between people from very different backgrounds and chances in life: residents of Stolipinovo (stigmatised as a “Roma”), an international artist, and an academic anthropologist. The exhibition charts the collaborative process of socially engaged art – from first introductions, looking for common ground, timid proposing of ideas, to co-creation, working together, and then towards platforming and highlighting the initiatives made by people in Stolipinovo.
The exhibition shares with audiences over 3 years of working together. With artworks ranging from zines, handmade books, silk prints, knitted clothes, short films, journalism, and interventions in public space, it raises questions pivotal to the field of Socially Engaged Art – how can co-creation happen between people of vastly different backgrounds and understandings of the world? What is the presence of the artist and anthropologist? How can they acknowledge and humbly, honestly communicate their position/ their mark on the work, as well as highlighting the creativity, enthusiasm and determination of the citizens of Stolipinovo whom they worked with?

“Duvarmuseum: The Art of Collaboration” is the second major showcase of Duvar Kolektiv’s work, following “The Beauty We Share” in the program of Plovdiv European Capital of Culture 2019. Duvar Kolektiv is made up of three core members – Hannah Rose, an artist from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Nikola Venkov, an anthropologist from Plovdiv, and Yanka Simova, a creative woman from Stolipinovo. They have worked in collaboration with many citizens form Stolipinovo in order to nurture spaces of exchange. Through their work they showcase an often unseen and ignored human scale of relation and cooperation.
The exhibition walks you through the highly personal journey of Duvar Kolektiv’s artistic projects. Also presented are four processes of co-creation, which were initiated as part of Duvar Kolektiv’s 2020 project “Duvarmuseum” for fostering art and cultural scene within Stolipinovo.

“Duvarmuseum: The Art of Encounter” takes place in the frame of Goethe Institut’s project “Building Together”. The presented works from “Duvarmuzei” are realised with the financial assistance of “Socially Engaged Art” program of the National Cultural Fund.
